LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- Today, there was a celebration of two long careers in the Lawton Police Department that are coming to an end.

Captain Craig Akard and Sergeant Steve Handy retired today, after more than 30 years with the department.  At Lawton City Hall, friends, family and fellow officers shared stories of Akard and Handy's time on the force.

They both leave some advice for the new officers.

"Be a survivor of this job. Let me come to your retirement. Don't be a victim of it," said Capt. Craig Akard.

"They need to watch each other's back just religiously. You have to take care of each other," said Sgt. Steve Handy.

Akard is moving on to work as a planning specialist with the Lawton Fire Department and Handy will be spending time with family and friends.
