LOVE COUNTY, OK (KFOR) – Love County Sheriff Joe Russell, who was arrested in July 2016 for corruption in office, willful neglect of duty and maladministration, has accepted a plea deal to a misdemeanor charge.

According to court documents, Russell allowed several individuals to use meth inside his own home in his presence and harboring a known fugitive for weeks because she was dating his son at the time. Shortly after the fugitive broke up with the sheriff’s son and moved in with someone else, she was arrested.

According to KFOR, the sheriff is also accused of willful maladministration by allowing his nephew, James Conn Nipp, a man who investigators believe is connected to a missing persons case, to meet with family members unsupervised in a room with evidence.

Russell resigned from office last year. He has pleaded no contest to willful omission to perform a duty and will serve one year of unsupervised probation and pay $300.
