Okmulgee officer shoots passenger during police pursuit

OKMULGEE, OK- The woman passenger shot by police during a high-speed pursuit in Okmulgee has been identified.

Okmulgee County deputies attempted an undercover buy of items Michael David Sanchez outside a Walmart store just after 3:00 p.m. March 8th. Sanchez sped away in a Chevy Malibu sedan. Sanchez attempted to drive around a police barrier when an officer fired his weapon, sticking Amanda Morrow in the neck.

She was flown to a Tulsa hospital. Sanchez was arrested.

OKMULGEE, Okla. (AP) - Authorities are investigating after an Okmulgee police officer shot and wounded a woman who was a passenger in a car involved in a high-speed chase.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says the pursuit began Wednesday after officers tried to make an "undercover buy" of items from a man in Okmulgee. The OSBI says the man fled before officers could complete the purchase, and police began pursuing him.

The OSBI says an officer opened fire on the vehicle during the chase, striking a female passenger in the neck. The woman was flown to a Tulsa hospital, and her condition was not immediately available. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant, and authorities say more charges are likely.

    Empire Public Schools decided to close their doors today due to an influx of the flu virus. As of January 18th, about 50 students in Pre-K through 5th grade were absent from school. That's about 20 percent of their enrollment. Empire Mayor Perry Brinegar says staff and workers spent the morning cleaning and disinfecting classrooms, hallways, and different areas (gyms, buses, lunchroom). School will resume Monday morning.
