LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- A community-based group in a south Lawton neighborhood started up a new community garden on Saturday.
The new garden is in the Ranch Oak neighborhood.

Raking, fertilizing, planting was the start of community members showing their support for the new garden.

7-year-old Hallston Goss was one of those volunteers ready to lend a hand.

"I get to do something for people that never got to eat healthily and help them eat healthily," said Hallston.

Another volunteer Gerry Matlock said the day reminded him of when he was young.

"When I was growing up we had fresh vegetables,” said Matlock. “That's how our grandparents fed us, and I think this way they can learn how to grow their own vegetables."

Garden community organizer Chelsee Dewberry said the day represented what her family stands for, which is giving back. Her family owns the land the garden is built on.

“It'll help the elderly,” said Dewberry. “The kids can come out here and teach them how to grow their own produce and even teach them how to sell their own produce and eat healthily."

She said after the garden begins to grow the goal is to continue expansion by eventually building a greenhouse

“Just keep it flourishing,” said Dewberry. “Hopefully, other communities will take part and put one in their neighborhood and have another piece to the bigger picture we are out here trying to accomplish."
