LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- On March 15th, Goodwill's Adult Day Care Center honored its outstanding employee of the year.

That award was presented to Goodwill Activity Director William Gambrell for his work in Resident Services.

Gambrell was given the award last week at the 22nd Annual Leading Age Oklahoma Conference in Oklahoma City.

The award is presented to individuals who exemplify the mission of the Goodwill organization -- 'To help people with disabilities and disadvantages achieve maximum independence.'

Clients of the center celebrated Gambrell's outstanding award.

Although the day was dedicated to honoring him, he said his focus will remain on helping those at the center.

“It's all about giving back,” said Gambrell. “After serving 20 years in the military it's about giving back."

"William is always nice and kind to me,” said Ebelyn McQuain, Goodwill member of 14 years.

She said after witnessing Gambrell work at the center for five years no one deserves the outstanding employee of the year award more than he does.

"Because he works at doing things,” said McQuain "He keeps us busy here all the time."

Gambrell is responsible for managing activities for nearly 40 participants a day at the center.

He also oversees the transportation and janitorial departments.

Vice President Elizabeth Skulski, submitted Gambrell's name for the award.

She said making that decision was an easy one.

"I like to say that he is a salary maker, not a taker,” said Skulski. “He's very vested not only in the adult day care but for Goodwill as a whole."

"A lot of times they don't see that,” said Gambrell. “What Goodwill does behind the door or behind the scenes. Coming to the adult day care has opened up my eyes a lot."

He said receiving the Outstanding Employee of the Year award was simply an expression of doing what he loves.

“At the end of the day if they can go home with a smile on their face I feel I've fulfilled my purpose and done my job for that day,” said Gambrell.

Gambrell encourages anyone who would like to volunteer to stop by the center and get involved with all Goodwill has to offer.
