LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - If you are looking to add a member to your family, you're in luck! Lawton Animal Welfare is holding a free adoption event on Friday, March 17th.

Friday is the "O-dopt - O'thon", where thanks to donations from the community, the first 21 dogs adopted will be free.

Lawton Animal Welfare Superintendent Russell Anderson said the animals never stop coming in, so events like the one tomorrow are necessary to save lives.

"Every event like this helps,” Anderson said. “Every adoptable animal that goes out the front door is important to us. It really does help when space becomes a premium."

To help clear out the kennels, the first 21 adoptions tomorrow are completely free, thanks to the generosity to a few local businesses.

"7-Up, our local bottling company here, stepped up and donated some money and we still have money left over from the fishing derby from Little Dam Bait Shop,” Anderson said.

Anderson said they've also had lots of people in the Lawton community coming in to pay the adoption fee for someone else.

"If someone came down here and donated just 20 dollars, they're securing an adoption for tomorrow,” Anderson said. “It's a great thing. Even an individual can come down here and make a difference"

To adopt a pet Friday, all you have to do is wear something green and say "It's My Lucky Day to be Adopted". Anderson said the event is all about saving the life of every animal - whether you're a Lawton resident or not.

"To stop the euthanasia down here, all the animals have to go out the front door. The ones we're taking out the back door are not success stories to us,” Anderson said. “When we do promotions like this and have special events, it's not just Lawton. Lawton is the hub for southwest Oklahoma so we have people come from all over to adopt."

The event runs from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. with a break from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. for lunch.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
