COTTON CO. (KSWO) - Firefighters spent the afternoon on Thursday battling a fire in Cotton county that destroyed around a hundred bales of hay.

The fire broke out just before 4:30 pm northeast of Walters, two miles east of road 1760 and highway 65.

It took Walters and Hulen’s volunteer fire departments about two and a half hours to contain it.

Those at the fire quickly moved intact hay bales out the way, saving more than half the total number of bales.

Officials estimate that the fire burned an estimated $5,000 of hay.

Wheat fields surrounding the area helped to keep the flames mostly contained to the hay bales.

No word on what caused the fire.
