LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- 'Knocking Down Poverty' was the theme at Thunderbird Lanes on Saturday. A group of community members from Leadership Lawton Fort Sill Class XXVII held a fundraiser to help fight poverty in Comanche County. It was $30 for each person to bowl. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Salvation Army's Getting Ahead program to empower those that are in need to turn their lives around and get back on their feet.

Jim Landmark was just one of nearly 80 community members that decided to participate in the bowling event.

"I think you have to think about more than just yourself,” said Landmark. “You have to be part of something bigger."

He, his son and colleagues gathered their team together for a fun time while giving back.

"We are calling ourselves the 'Mixed Nuts’,” said Landmark. “We've got a few let's say adult men and a few younger guys."

Each year a new class of members in Leadership Lawton Fort Sill pick a cause to raise money for as a class project.

Class spokesman Albert Rivas said each year their goal is to address community challenges through their class project, which is what inspired the fundraiser.

"We have a poverty rate of 17.6 percent which beats the national average at 14.6 percent,” said Rivas. “We want to be part of fixing that problem."

He said they couldn't have made a better choice than to team up with the Salvation Army..

"To be part of what they're doing and just be a little piece of that is something that brings joy to our hearts as a class,” said Rivas.

Rivas said his hope is that the bowling event sparks more fundraisers like this one in the community.

"Poverty is an ongoing issue, and it will be for years to come,” said Rivas. “But, with our class at least we are part of that journey to try and end poverty in the Comanche county area."

Leadership Lawton Fort Sill Class XXVII raised $2,198 for the event on Saturday. They plan to have more events on giving back to the community.
