OK Senate approves teacher pay raise, gas tax

OK (KSWO)- The Oklahoma state Senate has passed a bill to give teachers a pay raise.

The bill would raise the price of gas and diesel to pay for road maintenance and use the money already put back for road projects instead on education. The problem that many in the Senate pointed out is that they don't have the power to authorize that move.

"And you go home and tell people you voted for a teacher’s pay raise, make sure you put an asterisk next to it and say, but you know we really knew it wasn't going to happen,” said John Sparks, the Senate Minority Leader.

This bill would increase teacher pay by four percent at $1,500 this year. In order for the tax increases on gas to go through, the House of Representatives has to pass the measure.
