LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- It was a special night for 21 local residents who graduated from Lawton Police Department's Citizens Police Academy.

The 12-week course gives participants a chance to learn more about how each division of the police department works.

Officers say it's also a way to improve communication between police and citizens, as the department often considers them the "eyes and ears" of the community.

Graduates, Brenton Jones and Brandon Crisp, both criminal justice majors at Cameron University, say for them, the Citizens Police academy is a good stepping stone and highly recommend it for those looking to work in law enforcement.

Jones says, "If looking into it as a career path you get a better understanding of what you're getting into, you get to talk the professionals.” Crisp adds, “They teach you about all the aspects, processes in policing. You get to talk to the people that do that job and do it every day and get their perspective.”

The Citizens Police Academy training is held yearly, starting in January.  If you would like to sign up for next year's academy, you can find out more by visiting the Lawton Police Department website.
