LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - Fresh fruits and vegetables along with plans and other items were for sale at the Lawton Farmers Market on Saturday morning for their first day of the season.

Shirley Linville and her husband spent the morning at the farmers market.

"I come every Saturday, I love this place," said Linville.

While she normally comes for the fruit and veggies, on Saturday she bought something she's never owned before.

"I happened to find two lovely wind chimes for my garden,” said Linville. “I'm just thrilled to death."

Some people may think that a farmers market only has crops, but Lawton Farmers Market Manager Keith Hall said they try to have a wide variety of items.

"We want a cross spectrum of meats, eggs, veggies, crafts, honey,” said Hall. “Anything that the crowd would identify with a farmers market we want to be there."

Hall said they had a great turnout on opening day with dozens of people shopping and 15 vendors. He thinks part of it was the nice weather, and the winter market. In years past, they closed in October, but this year they were able to stay open year around.

"It really helped get the word out and let Lawton know that there is a farmers market, and we're going to be here consistently," said Hall.

While items for sale drew a crowd, Hall says there is something in the atmosphere that makes this place special.

"The smiles on peoples’ faces,” said Hall. “I mean, they bring their pets and their children. Couples walking up and down holding hands. It’s just great to see the smiles on everybody's faces. It's spring time of the year. It's just a healthy place to be."

Linville couldn't agree more and is looking forward to next weekend.

And for her wind chimes she's excited to put them in her garden, and she's sure they won't disappoint.

"I've loved everything I've gotten here so far," Linville.

The Lawton Farmers Market is open this season at the Great Plains Coliseum parking lot from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday. Find them on Facebook for more information.
