LAWTON, OK (KSWO) Boy Scouts across Oklahoma gathered at Cameron University on Saturday to earn merit badges.

At the annual Merit Badge University, nearly 80 scouts took part in 17 different merit badge sessions including robotics, engineering, and weather.

Cameron University professors, local high school teachers and even First Alert Chief Meteorologist Austin Bowling volunteered to teach scouts for them to receive merit badges.

Local boy scout’s committee chair, Sean Bateman, says the event provides an opportunity for boy scouts to learn more than they would in a typical classroom setting.

"Many of them might be considering careers in engineering or meteorology or things like that,” said Bateman. “Many of the STEM fields. So many of the merit badges we are offering are in the STEM area as well as the merit badges the boy scouts have to take to earn their rank advancement."

He said most of the merit badges were completed at the event.

Scouts were given a blue card as proof they've earned the merit badge and will later be awarded patches from their units.
