United Way of Stephens County Day of Caring Volunteers Needed

STEPHENS COUNTY, OK (KSWO)- The United Way of Stephens County is looking for volunteers to help with their Annual Day of Caring.

There will be 15 or 16 projects ranging from weeding flower beds and planting new shrubs to organizing office files and food pantries; painting interior and exterior walls; updating parking lot striping; replacing worn doors; mowing grass and trimming trees; cleaning camp cabins and grounds;  light carpentry work; cleaning windows; and pressure washing sidewalks for volunteers to help with.

“It will be a busy day,” Nicole Punneo, chairman of the United Way board, said of the Day of Caring, “but a lot of good things will happen and a lot of us will walk away with a feeling of having helped and also learning and understanding more the mission of each agency.”

Teams or individuals from businesses, industries, civic and service clubs, school groups and church organizations are encouraged to contact either Helen Stewart or Ed Darling at the United Way office, (580) 255-3648.

“It’s a fun way to help,” Gina Flesher, chairman of the 2017 project, admitted. “Not only are we able to assist the agencies, we make new friends, work alongside our co-workers from the office and enjoy being involved in projects inside and outside. It’s really a win-win day for us all… Having the extra manpower enables many of the organizations to fix things that are broken, to spruce up their facilities and to address issues that otherwise might go untouched.

Workers will gather at 8:00 a.m.  on May 12th in the conference room of Duncan Regional Hospital for breakfast, project assignments, and a group kickoff photo. Work begins at 9:00 a.m. with lunch scheduled during the noon hour. Work should be finished by 4:00 p.m.

“We’re so blessed to have the support of a caring community,” Flesher said. “We’re anxious to fill our lists of volunteers and to get started. And we’re grateful to a number of local businesses who are providing a wealth of behind-the-scenes support. It’s really a big day for our community.”

Service project proposals will be accepted until April 12th.
