DUNCAN, OK (KSWO) – The City of Duncan and the Duncan Lakes Commission have started working on several projects to upgrade some of the Lakes in Duncan. One of those projects include the Clear Creek Lake Fishing House--which residents say had become not only an eyesore, but unsafe.

Over the last 18 months, they received several complaints from residents about the condition of the lake fish house.

City council approved purchasing about 6-thousand dollars worth of materials with money from the city's Capital Improvement.

City workers, and members from the lake commission started working on the project about 2 weeks ago and hope to have it back in shape within the next few weeks.

Ernest Smith has lived in Duncan for about 30 years and comes out to Clear Creek Lake two to three times a week to fish. Over the years Smith said the fish house started becoming a safety hazard.

"It was starting to fall apart, and you couldn't walk in certain areas, it was too dangerous," Smith said.

The dock which was built more than 30 years ago started weakening and becoming unusable over time. Duncan Public Works Director Alex Henry said revitalizing and reshaping the fish house is a top priority.

"There was no real place to fish, there was no fish house on this lake, this is the only structure. We've got banks, and a dock here and there, but there was not a enclosed structure like there was on the other lakes to do any sort of fishing," Henry.

The street department is also assisting the Duncan Lakes Commission with the improvements. Henry says they have used about 55-hundred dollars removing and rebuilding the wood planks. They are also re-purposing steel pipes that were leftover from other jobs.

"They have put in a lot of good work, they re-decked the entire place to this point. They have done the structural repairs," Henry said.

Smith said he's glad officials listened to residents concerns and they're once again making the popular fish house useable.

"I think it's wonderful. I like fishing off of that dock, when the winds are blowing and I can't fish out of the boat, I can fish off the dock," Smith said.

"I have heard from no less than 10 to 15 people that are ecstatic that this is moving forward. This is one of the more popular lakes here so they are happy to get back on Clear Creek Lake to be able to do some fishing," Henry said.

In the next couple of days workers will finish up the cosmetic repairs, like repainting the house and rails.

This project is just one of many upgrades. On Thursday, April 27, the Lakes Commission and the City of Duncan will hold a meeting at the Red River Technology Center from 6 to 8 p.m. to get input from residents on other things they need to work on.
