LAWTON, OK (KSWO)-About 20 students from Southwest Oklahoma participated in the City of Lawton Stormwater management's first ever speech contest.

The event raises awareness about the importance of protecting our water and is also held in observance of Earth Day which is Saturday.

Students were split into three divisions--junior, intermediate and senior divisions.  Each contestant had to prepare and perform their speech focused on the theme: "Stormwater, street to stream, keep it clean."

Lawton High School Sophomore, Ijeoma Okere was the first place winner in the senior division.  She says she wrote her speech partly from personal experience while living in Nigeria and jumped at the chance to speak on this topic when her English teacher told her about it.

Okere said “Polluted stormwater is a huge problem in Nigeria and when my teacher presented the flyers to us I was like yes I'm for this, I'm in."

First, second and third place prizes were awarded in each division. Okere, won a 100-dollar prize.  Second place winners received 50 dollars and third place won 25 dollars.
