LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - On Saturday families flooded the streets of downtown Lawton for Lawton-Fort Sill Open Streets.

The twice a year event encourages people to get out and be active with their kids.

Basketball, Jump Rope, Inflatables, Bikes, and hundreds of kids are what caused C Avenue to close down for a couple hours.

The Open Streets event is held twice a year to encourage kids to get out and have fun outside.

Since it was earth day, they had tomatoes for the kids to plant.

Kim Damon and her family just moved to the area and says this shows her what the community is about and lets them be a part of it.

"There is lots of things for them to do and learn," Damon said. "They just did the tomato plant, played games, and different activities so I guess they're having a great time. We all are."

The games weren't just for the kids, adults joined in and played basketball and nine square in the air.

Richard Rogalski says the street festival lets people learn about community service organizations and be active.
"The biggest thing is to get out and be active and remember how activity can help us," Rogalski said. "How we feel better when we're outside being active."

While the street being closed can be inconvenient for some Chelsea Hildrith says is glad they did it.

"It just shows that Lawton really cares about the kids and their health and activities outdoors," Hildrith said.

If you missed out on today's free event, the next open streets event is scheduled for October 28th.
