LAWTON, OK (KSWO)-For the second year in a row, Lawton High School is being recognized in the U.S. News and World Report's annual rankings of the country's best high schools.

The U.S. News rankings include information on more than 22,000 public high schools in the nation.
Schools are awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college.
Of the 80 Oklahoma schools included in the 2017 U.S. News Best High Schools rankings, 14 received silver medals and 66 were awarded bronze.
Lawton High ranked 18th in the state of Oklahoma, receiving a bronze award.

Superintendent Dr. Tom Deighan said he is proud to make the list of our state's top schools.

"With schools like Edmond, Norman North, Stillwater, and Deer Creek. It just shows the quality of staff we have the quality of students and the overall professionalism of Lawton Public Schools teachers," Deighan said.

The rankings focus on student outcomes with an emphasis on graduation rates and state tests.
The AP testing participation rate at Lawton High School is 30 percent. In subjects like Mathematics and English they scored 81 percent.

"A lot of people don't realize that AP courses are essentially college work in the high school setting and so that are students as early as Sophomores and Juniors are taking AP and earning such a statewide recognition its a testimony to our teachers and students ability so they just deserve all the praise," Deighan said.

Despite Oklahoma's current budget shortfall, problems funding teacher pay raises,  and continuing cuts to education. Dr. Deighan says it's encouraging to see teachers who still show up to work and focus on the kid's needs.

"When we focus on the students needs as teachers or the community I think we are always going to do the best and we are always going to do the right thing, and I think Lawton High has just proven that today in amazing ways," Deighan said.

Overall Deighan said they are going to continue to thrive and be the best they can be.

"As we continue to increase classroom support, technology, textbooks and everything else I don't think there is any LIMIT to what are students and staff can accomplish," Deighan said.

Deighan expects Lawton High will have a special celebration for the teachers and students.

Another southwest Oklahoma school's receiving some recognition was Altus High School which fell within the top 80 schools in the state.
