ENID, OK (KSWO)- While Oklahoma lawmakers continue to search for ways to increase teachers' salaries, Enid Public Schools is taking matters into their own hands.
Thanks to local funding, brand new teachers hired within Enid receive a one-time $2,000 bonus. The stipend is for new teachers that teach foreign languages, math, science, and special education.
Enid Public Schools says they have been able to recruit 16 new teachers every year.
"What we are finding is in the areas where we offer the recruitment bonus we're having, more success we're finding the best and the brightest for our students," said Amber Fitzgerald with Enid Public Schools.
The Oklahoma State School Board Association reports 17-percent of new teachers in Oklahoma either leave the state or profession after their first year and 10-percent of teachers with a decade of experience leave every year.
