WFPD: Person of interest in murder investigation dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) -

Newschannel 6 has learned the person of interest in the murder investigation on Thomas Avenue has died after shooting himself in the head on Friday afternoon.

Sgt. John Spragins said he passed away before midnight on Friday.

The check suspicious person call came into the Wichita Falls Police Department around 5:14 p.m.

Sgt. Spragins said an off-duty officer saw Damon Jason McLellan, 42, in the park near Miller Road and Peach Tree Lane.

Uniformed officers responded to the scene and attempted to approach Damon McLellan. At that time, Sgt. Spragins said McLellan pulled out a handgun and shot himself in the head.

McLellan was rushed to United Regional Health Care Systems with life-threatening injuries. 

The scene near Peach Tree Lane and Miller Road is being processed by officers.

Friday morning the WFPD announced McLellan as a person of interest in the murder of his mother, Madonna McLellan, 69.

Her body was found inside her home on Wednesday morning on Thomas Avenue. 

Madonna's body was sent off for autopsy where it was discovered she suffered a traumatic injury.
