Lawton Police Department to enforce left lane passing-only law

LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- Starting today, you are no longer allowed to drive in the left lane unless you're passing another vehicle. Violators could face a fine of up to $235.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has installed "slower traffic, keep right" and "do not impede left lane" signs in 234 locations along I-35 and I-40.

Now for some clarification on the law, it does not apply to city streets. Only highways that run through the cities. Public Information officer Timothy Jenkins said it is not extended to regular city streets.

"Any highway in the city, Rogers Lane and I-44, we will be enforcing the law. You cannot ride the left lane. But normal streets, Sheridan and Cache, the law does not apply for those streets," said LPD officer SGT. Tim Jenkins.

However, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Lawton Police, and the Comanche County Sheriff's Departments will all enforce the law.
