LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - Students at Eisenhower Middle School honored veterans Tuesday evening with a special Veterans Day Assembly.

Some eighth-grade students gave speeches on what the holiday means to them, and why it’s vital to honor those who served the country. A pair of veterans also spoke at the event, discussing what it means to serve.

One student said she thought the event was important because people don't talk about the sacrifices veterans make.Terry Ricer, a veteran who teaches at EMS added that the assembly was a life lesson for students.

"Being able to actually put a face on a veteran,” Ricer said. “You know somebody that you've talked to, I think gives them a greater understanding of what it means to be a citizen and responsible for this country."

Another student at the event said the least they can do is say “thank you” to the veterans still alive and honor those who've passed.
