LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - 120 Lawton teachers have some extra money for projects at their schools after the Lawton Public School Foundation awarded $100,000 in grants at the Pillar Appreciation Dinner.
Tonja Pool has been teaching at Central Middle School for three year, and applied for the grant for the first time this year. She was surprised to learn the board decided to give her a grant.
"I was looking for virtual reality headsets," Pool said. "I teach sixth-grade geography and it would just provide my students with the ability to experience these places first hand without ever leaving my classroom."
Lisa Carson, the executive director for the Lawton Public School Foundation, said this is the most money they've ever given away in grants, all thanks to donations and support from local businesses and residents.
The foundation also awarded grants for more basic classroom needs, like desks for special needs children.
The teachers will receive the funding later in the week.
