LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- Hundreds of wreaths were placed at veteran's final resting place at Lawton's Highland Cemetery on Saturday. It was all part of National Wreaths Across America Day. U.S. Veterans are honored at cemeteries nationwide by having a holiday wreath laid on their grave site.
This is the 8th year wreaths have been placed at Highland Cemetery. The event started with a ceremony then wreaths were placed by 50 volunteers including service members and the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. They laid 414 wreaths that day.
Event organizer Karolyn Anders said the day was one of their biggest turnouts and dedicated to paying respect to those who risked their lives for our country.
"I think sometimes as people and children grow older they forget our veterans who have given so much in so many ways to ensure that we have the freedoms that we have," said Anders. "And we need to teach our children those lessons."
Anders said plans for the wreath laying has been in the works since October. The event was sponsored by the America Veterans supporters.
