SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

New information on the death of a man killed in Shelby County has loved ones mourning and searching for answers tonight.

It happened Tuesday night on County Road 2798 in the community of Goober Hill, near Patroon.

A press release from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said ...

Seventy-year-old Louis Troy Risinger was carrying a firearm when he walked out of a home. He was shot when he did not comply with verbal commands, the press release stated.

The country home of Troy and Edith Risinger depicts family and friendship.

Don Windham, Troy Risinger's first cousin, is right down the road. The pastor, in his words, has no clue what made the cousin he grew up with snap.

"He wouldn't hurt nobody,” Windham said. “He was just an easy going individual. Loved life."

What's even more perplexing is that Windham and Risinger had a phone conversation about an hour before the incident which ended Troy’s life. They talked about the things country cousins speak of.

"He was talking to me about his horses and what he was going to do,” Windham said. “Go and take down some deer feeders that he had out. We just talked normal."

Minutes after that conversation, something went astray. Windham said Edith Reisinger, a frail woman, called her daughter when her 70-year-old-man's behavior changed.

"He kinda threw stuff around in the living room. It wasn't like him,” Windham said. “That was a different Troy Risinger that everybody knew."

A sheriff's deputy, a nephew to Windham and a second cousin to Risinger, tried to calm the husband, father, and grandfather down.

No words worked. The sheriff's office reports that Risinger exited the front door with a firearm. A deputy fired the fatal shot.

"It really upset the deputy that had to this, you know. And we hold nothing against the law enforcement,” Windham said.

An autopsy has been ordered. This tiny community in Shelby County is hoping it will provide some explanation.

"We may never know what happened, but we do know that he wouldn't harm nothing,” Windham said

The Texas Rangers are conducting an investigation.

Troy Risinger's funeral is scheduled for Monday. Windham will be helping with the officiating. He said it will be a difficult service to perform.
