LAWTON, Ok (RNN Texoma) - LAWTON, Ok (KSWO) - OSBI is leading the investigation of a deadly officer involved shooting that happened near Northwest Lawton Tuesday morning.
Around 6:45 officers responded to a disturbance call on Northwest Taylor Avenue.
"When they arrived on the scene they were visiting with the person who called, finished that conversation. The other party involved was a gentleman who approached officers with a knife. Officers tried to talk him into putting the weapon down, he did proceed towards the officers and attempted to use less lethal force to get him to stop his approach to them and that didn't work," said OSBI agent Lynn Williams.
OSBI said while the two officers tried to reason with the suspect, he then ran towards them with the knife cutting one of them on the back of the leg. Both officers then fired shots at the suspect and he died at the scene.
OSBI said the officers did not have on body cameras at the time of the incident.
"Well if you visit with the witnessed around the officers were pleading with them to drop the knife and stop the attack and let them stop. You know you do everything you can to stop that from happening you try to use to use less lethal force and it dint work. When it comes to the point where you are cutting one of the officers you have to take it up a notch to defend yourself," said Williams.
One officer was treated at the hospital for his injuries and released.
Both officers were placed on routine administrative leave by Lawton Police Department. The OSBI will only release the police officers' names if criminal charges are filed against them.
The family has identified the suspect, but OSBI said they are not releasing his name until they collect his fingerprints.
