MARLOW, Ok (RNN Texoma) - Tomorrow will be the 13th annual Yayo's Run, where they will be riding bikes and raising money to help a five year old boy named Jose who's battling Leukemia
Yayo and his family have been putting on this fundraising event for several years because they have had friends and family in the past impacted by cancer and know the financial burden.
"This event tomorrow is for Jose Mitchell, a child who's got cancer," said Debra Bethany, Yayo's family member. "We're sponsoring him and his family. We're supporting him and his family. All the funds we're raising tomorrow are going towards him, so his mom and dad can use them for whatever they need... Food, gas, to get to and from his medical needs, if he wants toys, whatever. This is just completely for him and his family."
Yayo's run had a humble beginning, but has since grown into a big event. It has even brought in bikers from across the nation, including California and New Mexico.
"Oh my goodness. They started with very few bikes. I cannot even remember," said Bethany. "I know it was very minimal and every year it's just bigger and bigger and bigger. Last year I think they said it was over 100 bikes last year, so this year we're expecting even more even though they're saying rain. We're just hoping for more and more and more."
Rain or shine, Yayo's run will begin tomorrow at Yayo's house at 11 in the morning. From there, they will ride to Harley Davidson in Lawton, then to Medicine Park, and then back to Yayo's for a party. At the party, there will be lots of food, live music, and a silent auction, where a motorcycle worth over $10,000 will be up for grabs.
"It means a lot to us," said Bethany. "It means a lot to Lupe and Yayo. There's a lot of work in it but you don't ever hear anybody that's out here working, you'll never hear them complaining. We're out here laughing, just having a good time. And when everything's all said and done, to see the family that we sponsor that year, it's just awesome."
Yayo said he is already planning the 14th and the 15th annual runs, and the 15th will be a special year. He would not tell me the surprise he is planning, but said it is going to be big!
