Lawton Salvation Army prepares to help with hurricane relief

LAWTON, Ok (RNN Texoma) - The Lawton Salvation army will join forces with other Salvation Army chapters to aid in the hurricane relief. Major David Robinson said because storms are so unpredictable, it is hard to plan what to bring and what to do, but the main thing is to be ready.

"I've done this for twenty years and I've never been on one that's exactly the same," said Major Robinson. "Everybody says, what do you plan to take? What do you plan to do? You just go knowing that somebody's in need, and you're going to fill that need the best you can."

Salvation Army chapters from other states will be providing supplies, while the Lawton location is getting their canteen ready for if it is needed.

"We are preparing our canteen," said Major Robinson. "We'll have food on there to feed 1,500 meals, if called for, that we can load up and be gone within the day."

While many can find it difficult or stressful, Major Robinson says he loves helping people in the midst of disaster.

"I guess I love being in the middle of the action, but I love making sure people are taken care of," said Major Robinson. "When there's a huge need, when there's a tragedy, I want to be there. I want to be able to help."

He encourages those who want to help with the hurricane relief to donate on the Salvation Army website.

"100% of anything donated to the Salvation Army for disaster work goes 100% to disaster work," said Major Robinson. "So, if anyone wants to give, that's the best way."

If you would like to donate, you can visit the Salvation Army website at disaster.salvationarmyusa.org/give or you can call 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769).
