LPS awards $15,000 in grants to teachers

Lawton-For 16 years now, the Lawton Public Schools Foundation has given grants to teachers to use towards projects in their classrooms.

Wednesday, the lucky recipients were five teachers at Lawton High School.  LPS Foundation President Barry Ezerski says the grant program allows teachers to bring a new way of thinking and learning into the classroom.

The teachers' ideas range from expanding the scope of English literature to showing students innovative ways to create energy.  English teacher Kimberly Stormer says she plans to bring more diverse books into her classroom to match the diversity in her class.  Science teacher James Havens was awarded more than $600 and says it allows students to take what they read in the textbook and make it reality.

The Foundation awarded grants to 34 teachers this year, totalling nearly $16,000.
