School security scam trial opens in Lawton

Lawton_The jury was selected Monday morning, and testimony began Monday afternoon in the case of Michael Brown, a former Lawton police officer, who's charged with filing false claims against the state in connection with the Lawton Public Schools security scam.

Brown is the last defendant charged in the scandal to go to trial.

Like many others, he is accused of turning in fake time sheets to get paid for security work that he never performed.

Prosecutors say he was not part of the larger conspiracy that paid kickbacks to scam ringleaders.

Opening statements began around one Monday afternoon.

The trial is expected to wrap up by midweek.
