Comanche County man on trial for assaulting a juror

Lawton_ The assault trial of Bennie Cooper, Cache, opened Monday morning in Comanche County District Court.   Cooper is accused of attacking a juror in February 2006.

Cooper was on trial at the time for kidnapping and raping his stepdaughter.   As he was being led into the courtroom, Cooper lunged at a juror, grabbed him by the neck, and started choking him.

As a result of the outburst, the judge declared a mistrial in the rape and kidnapping case.

Cooper's new trial on those charges will start May 14th.

His assault trial is expected to go to the jury by the middle of the week.
