Lawton Police identify homicide victim; search for killer begins

LAWTON-- Gunshots rip through a south Lawton neighborhood early Thursday morning leaving one person dead. The shooting happened in a vacant field near SW 15th and Tennessee. Investigators say the victim is 20-year-old Michael Poe. He died at the scene after he was shot several times.

So far, investigators haven't made any arrests, but they are looking for several persons of interest and an SUV they were driving.  Koteia Murray, who lives in an apartment near the crime scene, saw that SUV and told us what she heard early Thursday morning.  "I went in my house, a jeep pulled up," Murray said.  "Next thing you know, bang, bang, bang and I'm ducking and calling 9-1-1."

Murray says police were already on the way when she called them. After officers arrived, Murray went outside and saw Michael Poe's lifeless body. She says he and several men were hanging out at an apartment before the shooting.  It's what the men were driving that Murray remembers most. "I said that's a nice Jeep, big wheels, fancy, it caught my eye and i didn't think any more of it."

Police said a heated exchange of words may have led up to Poe's murder. "We understand there was some sort of argument that took place prior to that, we don't know what it was about. We're still in the early stages of the investigation," said Lawton Police Chief Ronnie Smith.

Ever since the shooting, the entire field where the shooting happened has been roped off while police comb through it for evidence. Heavy downpours made that an even harder task, but until investigators think they've collected everything, they plan on keeping the scene closed.

Police say the SUV they're looking for is a newer model. It's pearl white and has 20-inch chrome wheels. Investigators say four men were seen inside it. If you have any information on this crime, call Lawton Crime Stoppers at 355-INFO.
