Oklahoma City (AP) _ State auditor and inspector Jeff McMahan says he spent just over an hour talking with FBI agents as part of an ongoing investigation. The Oklahoman first reported yesterday's meeting in a copyrighted story.
Mcmahan issued a statement today saying this is the third time he's met with agents and that he's trying to cooperate fully with the agency's investigation. He says he was asked by the FBI not to reveal what was discussed because the investigation is ongoing.
An FBI spokesman says the agency doesn't confirm or deny active investigations. The agency has been investigating alleged illegal political contributions in Southeast Oklahoma involving businessman Steve Phipps and former State Senator Gene Stipe. Phipps donated the maximum $5,000 to McMahan's campaign in 2002 and the two men have taken at least three trips together.
Phipps paid for a fishing trip to Lake Texoma and the two traveled together to New Orleans with their wives and were part of a trip to a casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.
