State agency lines up farmer to provide fresh produce

Austin_Workers for the Department of State Health Services are getting a chance to buy fresh produce at their Austin office.  The department's working with the sustainable food center of Austin to place weekly orders with Sonny Naegelin.  He farms near Lytle, about 20 miles southwest of San Antonio.

Department spokesman Doug McBride says the idea is to encourage department workers to eat healthier.  Andrew Smiley of the Sustainable Food Center said the nonprofit developed a web site where state employees can order and pay for a food basket.  The orders are sent electronically to Naegelin on Monday night for delivery on Thursday.

Participants pay $25 a week for a basket of fresh produce, which last week included squash, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and bell peppers. The number of employees who participated has increased from 140 when the program started two weeks ago to 171 last week.
