Super kids help super friend

Lawton_Some Altus students were sponsored by 7News in the Spirit of Survival Super Kids Marathon.  Altus Christian Academy had two inspirations to run-- health and fitness and one very special former classmate.

Karina Sones had been battling leukemia for the past three years. And that's what motivated the Altus Christian Academy to get involved in the Spirit of Survival.  The students set their goal and met it walking enough miles to earn Karina and her two brothers marathon medals.

"A great life lesson. They really understood they were doing something to encourage a little girl who was sick. They saw their families supporting them. It was such a positive experience," says Principal Dana Darby.

The students created their care package for Karina who now lives in another state.  "Altus Christian Academy is the only school and friends she was able to meet so we wanted to keep that lifeline going for her," says a friend of the family Dr. Nicole Hagedorn.  She says Karina is now believed to be cancer free.
