Suspect in custody after early morning arson

Lawton_An arson suspect is in custody in Lawton after a witness says they saw him setting fire to a mattress early this morning near 6th and Bishop.  That person's name has not been released.

The arrest of the suspect is following several reports of random fires overnight in nearby areas of South Lawton.  Here is the timeline:

  • 2:35 a.m. - report of two dumpsters on fire behind some business buildings at 4th and Lee.
  • 4:38 a.m. - report of hay bales on fire near 11th and Bishop.
  • Sometime after 6 a.m. - a man was spotted at 6th and Bishop trying to set fire to a mattress, where he was arrested and taken into custody.

The locations of the fires are relatively close to each other, but it is unknown whether the fires are connected.  The fire marshal's office is investigating, and you can count on 7News to keep you updated.
