Altus restaurant goes up in flames

Altus_Fire destroyed a popular restaurant in Altus Saturday morning. The blaze broke out at Western Sizzlin in the 300 block of Main Street.  Fire officials say flames were coming from the attic when they arrived on the scene shortly after 10 a.m. The restaurant had just opened for business.

Firefighters believe the blaze may have started sometime Friday night in the ventilation system. They say the restaurant is a total loss and estimate the dollar amount of destruction is 1.2 million dollars.

Altus Assistant Fire Chief Jimmy Rogers says by the time they arrived the flames were out of control. They had fire coming out of the vent pipe and it shot up 12 feet in the air. The flames even caught power lines on fire.  High winds fueled the flames and fire fighters were mopping up hot spots for five hours.

Rogers says the owner will rebuild and says all of his employees will have a job. The owner has other businesses in town and hopes to find a fit for staff. Customers say they will be missed.

One interesting fact, Rogers says this restaurant also burned 22 years ago. It was struck by lightning the day before he became a firefighter.
