Lawton_An 82-year-old Lawton man was robbed, beaten and left to die at about 8 p.m. Monday. Police found the body of Johnny Thorp at 248 NW 74th Street after a call came in to dispatch for a possible robbery. "Officers went to his house, and they found him inside the house deceased," said Lawton Police Chief Ronnie Smith. "He had some blunt trauma to the head, and was the apparent victim of a robbery." Police are now looking for Ricky Gallegos, 20, who they say they believe is responsible for Thorp's murder.
The robber made off with a small amount of cash, and Thorp's red pickup truck, which was later recovered. "The motive was apparently for money, they got a little bit of money off of him, that's about all," said Smith.
Tips have led police to two girls, age 15 and 16,l who have been taken into custody. "We'll take the case to the DA, and they'll probably be charged as part of this," said Smith. The two girls led police to also name Gallegos as their prime suspect. "He's a Hispanic male, about 5'8, 150 lbs," says Smith. "If anybody sees him please contact us. Right at this point, we consider him armed and dangerous."
Neighbors are understandably shaken, and wished to remain anonymous. One neighbor said she isn't sure how the robber entered Thorp's home, but there was no sign of forced entry. She noticed something was wrong when she saw his door open. One of Thorp's neighbors says she had just seen him at about 3 p.m. Monday. She says he was telling her how he really needed to take a vacation, but he had come down with the flu, and was feeling too weak.
