Lawton man beaten with axe handle

Lawton_A south Lawton man has been accused of attacking his cousin with an axe handle, and nearly beating him to death. When police arrived at the 300 block of SW Jefferson, they say they found Kirt Powell lying on the floor of his home. His father says Kurt suffered severe head trauma that led to swelling in his brain, and he remains in critical condition.

Police say James Mahaffey turned himself in on Friday morning, and his family members say he and Kurt lived together, but they're still not clear what went wrong between the two. Although Powell's father did not wish to speak on camera, he says his son and Mahaffey had been drinking before they got into an argument, which quickly turned physical.

Police got involved in the disturbance after receiving a call that a man was possibly dead at their home. Once police arrived, they discovered he was alive. Police say they found him assaulted, and unconscious, with a lot of head trauma. Detectives were called in to investigate, and they say the believe they have found an axe handle that was used in the beating.

Police are still investigating the motive of the attack, and at this point, they say they are not sure whether alcohol played a role. Powell's father says he is just praying his son will survive. Although detectives have interviewed Mahaffey, no charges have been filed. He is being held in jail on a complaint of assault with a deadly weapon.
