Fire out after heavy winds, downed power line spark blaze in wheat field

Cotton County_Heavy winds may have been the culprit of a fire that burned 25 acres of a wheat field in Cotton County on Tuesday afternoon.  The fire began around 1:15 p.m. on Highway 53, east of Walters.

Officials believe that a downed power line sparked the fire after electric company employees say the power line split in two.  The line has a breaker with which power could be cut, and workers repaired and reconnected the power line.

Firefighters from Walters, Hulen, and Geronimo quickly extinguished the blaze and tended to smoldering hot spots.
