Fire forces evacuation in Gotebo

Gotebo_Two homes were destroyed by a fast-moving fire that forced the evacuation of the Kiowa County town of Gotebo Thursday.  Firefighters there remained on the scene throughout the night, managing hot spots, and guarding against flare-ups created by the constant winds.

It began as a grass fire one mile southwest of Gotebo, when wind gusts took out an electrical power pole in a field around 2pm.  Strong winds drove the flames north toward the town.  At 2:30, emergency management told Gotebo residents to evacuate.

By 5:30, emergency responders had 75 percent of the fire contained, but not before it destroyed two homes and some sheds, and roughly 350 acres.

Residents were told they could return around 6 p-m, and now Kiowa County is dealing with power outages.
