Police on the hunt for shooter of Altus man

Altus_A Jackson County man is recovering after being shot three times late on Tuesday night, and the District Attorney has already issued a warrant for his shooter.

Altus resident Joshua Mealer was visiting a friend near the Falcon Inn and Suites when police say a man barged into the room and shot him three times.  The man then took off.  Police received a tip from Jackson County Memorial Hospital after a relative of Mealer called a nurse there.  The relative told the nurse that she wanted some help in treating a gunshot wound, and now police are out searching for his shooter.  Police are still searching for the man, so they are not releasing his name at this time, but they tell 7News that he should be in custody very soon.

Neighbor Glen McFadden says police found Mealer with three gunshot wounds just after two in the morning on Wednesday.  Altus Police Captain Michael Turner says Mealer had been visiting a friend when he was shot."  He was shot once in the chest, once in the side and then once in the leg."

According to the police report, the shooting occurred just after 11 p.m., and once it was reported, officers arrived on the scene almost two ours later.  Police say that it was a good thing a larger caliber weapon had not been used.  "We could very seriously be looking at a homicide on our hands," says Turner.

Police are still trying to determine the reason Mealer was shot.  "It's a serious incident," says Turner.  "I mean, he was shot, you know, right square in the center of the chest."  McFadden says his neighborhood is usually quiet.  "This is a peaceful place...this is the first time I've ever seen, ever heard of anything happening over here," he said.  However, since Tuesday night's shooting, he says he has changed his mind.  "It's disturbing, you know, disturbing to see that people can be shot just out of anything."

Charges against the shooter are listed as "shooting with intent to kill."  You can count on 7News to keep you updated on the search for the suspect.
