Small Parts Ultrasound

Definition: This is the ultrasound of superficial structures in the body such as the thyroid gland, the breast, and male scrotum. This ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of these areas. These ultrasounds do not use any ionizing radiation.

Alternative names: Thyroid sonogram, ultrasound of scrotum and contents, breast sonogram

Preparation for these exams: There is no preparation for these exams

How the test is performed:

Thyroid Ultrasound: You will lie on your back with your neck hyperextended. A clear, water-based conducting gel will be used on the neck at the thyroid region. A hand-held probe will be moved over that region to produce images.

Scrotum Ultrasound: The male patient will lie down for this exam. He will be asked to undress from waist down and covered with a sheet. The ultrasound technologist will only expose the testicles. A clear, water-based conducting gel will be used on this region. A hand-held probe will be moved over that region to produce images.

Breast Ultrasound: The female patient will lie down for this exam. She will be asked to put her arm above her head. The ultrasound technologist will then put a clear, water-based conducting gel on the breast at the proper clock position or region. BREAST ULTRASOUND IS NOT USED AS A SCREENING FOR BREAST PATHOLOGIES. A hand-held probe will be moved over that region to produce images. Most breast imaging is used following a diagnostic mammogram or for palpable pathologies.

Length of exam: 45min.
