Shapiro takes first step in bid for U.S. Senate

Irving_GOP State Senator Florence Shapiro announced on Tuesday that she's forming an exploratory committee for a possible run for U.S. Senate.  U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, who's considering a run for Texas Governor in 2010, has said she'll leave the chamber at the end of her current term or sooner. Her term runs through 2012.

Shapiro says she told fellow Republican Hutchison about forming a committee, but that conversations about pursuing the seat haven't been in the works.

Shapiro made her announcement, in Irving, flanked by family, North Texas leaders and retired Dallas Cowboys Quarterback and Businessman Roger Staubach.

Shapiro is a former teacher and ex-Plano Mayor who was elected to the Texas Senate in 1993.  If a U.S. Senator resigns, the Texas Governor appoints a replacement until an election is held.  Shapiro has told Governor Rick Perry and Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst about her decision. She says Perry's response was: "good luck.''

Perry has said he's seeking another term.
