Fire burns abandoned trailers

NEAR INDIAHOMA_ After a busy day for firefighters on Saturday, dry weather and near record heat led to more wildfires on Sunday in Comanche County. One destroyed some abandoned trailer homes, and caused Highway 62 to close temporarily near Post Oak Road. The initial report stated the trailers were on fire, but firefighters are investigating whether a grass fire or the trailer fires started first. We're told the property owner had the trailers on his land because he refurbishes them.

Most of the trailers had been sitting on the land for about twenty years. Because of extreme temperatures, wood and other components of the trailers had dried out, making them like firewood.

Years ago, the Cache Fire Department battled a simlar blaze involving the trailers. The cause for this fire is suspicious. "It's all we have is suspicion, any time we have an area that has no power to it whatsoever," Cache Fire Chief Dale Winham said. "And so we're looking at the possibility of maybe a grass fire being set which caused the trailers to catch on fire, the sheriff's department is investigating that at this time."

It took about an hour for firefighters to get the fire contained, because they weren't just fighting the flames, but the weather too. "I just got a report from the emergency manager that our humidity is down to 16 percent," Winham said. "With the winds that we have, that puts us into a critical fire danger. Doesn't take much at all to have a fire."

Seven fire departments responded to the scene, not because they needed the water, but because they needed the manpower to replace the firefighters who had been out working in the heat. "Well we're looking at temperatures of 107 degrees, and we put them in bunker gear, and we bump to about 130 degrees very quick," Winham said. "Plus, pulling hose, we're dehydrating, and so we can drop a firefighter very quickly."

With the possibility of arson surrounding this case, fire officials are asking you to report anything suspicious you see around town or out in the county.
