LPS adds crossing guards on busy Lawton streets

Lawton_Press Release_Lawton students will have adult assistance on hand when the cross some of the city's busiest streets as school begins Friday.

Barry Beauchamp, Superintendent of Lawton Public Schools (LPS), said Wednesday crossing guards will be posted at eight locations around the city to help youngsters cross high-traffic areas on school-day mornings and afternoons.

Locations are:

  • NW 26th Street and Cache Road
  • NW 53rd Street and Cache Road
  • SE 45th Street and Gore Blvd.
  • SW 52nd Street and Gore Blvd.
  • SW 67th Street and Gore Blvd.
  • SE 45th Street and Lee Blvd.
  • Intersection of Ferris Ave. and Sheridan Road

The action to add the crossings came after the modification of the transportation policy of middle and high school students.  LPS will monitor existing routes so buses are used as effectively as possible and provide the maximum possible service to Lawton families.  Adjustments will be made as necessary, but will continue to be largely dependent upon changes in school funding.

A few openings for crossing guards remain unfulfilled as of Wednesday.  If you are interested in becoming a crossing guard, contact the Shoemaker Education Center at 580-357-6900.
