Comanche County office switches to four-day work week

Comanche County_Workers at one Comanche County government office is the latest group to have switched from a five-day to a four-day work week.  They say it will save them on gas, give them more time for their families, and be better for the public.  With two separate schedules, the office will be open five days per week, nine-and-a-half hours per day.  One half of the office will work Monday through Thursday, and the other half Tuesday through Friday.  The new schedule will be on a two-month trial basis, but it seems to be catching on nationwide.

County Treasurer Barbara Burk says it's a win-win situation.  She says the public will have more time to conduct its business, and the employees will save money.  "Eighty percent of our staff here lives outside Lawton city limits," she said.  "Some of them drive a considerable distance, you know, at least thirty miles one-way."

Deputy Treasurers Regina Dees and Kim Geiger drive many more miles to get to and from work each day.  "I travel about sixty miles round trip," said Geiger.  "So that [four-day work week] does help me quite a bit in gas.  Just that one day really helps."  Dees agrees.  "I drive about sixty miles round trip one day," she said.  "So in the long run it's going to save me a pretty good chunk of change."

In addition to saving money and providing more family time, the extra day off affords time to run errands.  "It allows us to have an extra day off to take care of things that we need to take care of at home, and allows more time to spend with our kids on the weekends," said Dees.  Both Burk and Geiger said they have used the past two Fridays to their advantage - one went camping, the other to a family reunion.

However, Burk stresses that the most important part of shortening the work week and extending the hours is service to the public.  "We're accessible to the public more, and our girls have to work just the four days," she said.  Currently the office is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., but once they get after-hours security, their closing time will be 5:30 p.m.
