Retiring DHS director reflects on agency's changes

Lawton_After nearly 20 years on the job, the head of Comanche County's Department of Human Services child welfare system is calling it quits.  Friends, co-workers, and local child welfare advocates joined Bennie Henson in celebrating his retirement Wednesday.

He says a lot has changed since he started in terms of how DHS investigates child abuse and neglect cases.  Most of the time you may only hear the negative stories because of confidentiality.  "We have a lot of success stories where children successfully go back home and successfully stay at home," Henson said.  "I think a lot my staff has fed on that and looked to that as something that keeps them going and doing what they do."

Henson says he's also proud of his work to place kids with family members or people they know if they have to be removed from their homes.  He says it leads to a less traumatic experience for children.
