Time to get your flu shots! Drive-thru on October 21

Lawton_The Comanche County Health Department will have more flu vaccine than ever this fall.  The Centers for Disease Control reports that this year's vaccine production is at a record high - 145 million doses.  36,000 people die from flu-related complications each year, but getting a dose of the vaccine can dramatically reduce that number.

Healthcare workers already are hearing coughing and sneezing, and Keith Reed, the new Director for Comanche, Cotton, and Greer County Health Departments, says people tend to ignore the symptoms.  "Public health is where we do disease prevention and health promotion," he said.  "That's a critical part of health that we miss out of a lot in this country."  Reed says it's his mission to promote better health awareness.  "I feel that is just something I can make an impact on, and that's public health and improving the health status of our citizens."

Reed's first big project is the drive-thru flu clinic where anyone can pull right up to the Great Plains Coliseum in Lawton, roll down their window, and get their vaccine administered in about 5 minutes.  He'll be working hard, too.  "I may give a few shots.  I may be handing out forms. I plan on working all areas of the drive thru clinic to get to know the public," he said.

The drive-thru clinic is for adults only.  Beginning October 21, adults and children alike can get flu shots inside the health department.  This year, the health department is targeting four main groups for vaccination - children up to 18-years-old, pregnant women, people aged 50+, and those with chronic medical conditions.

The drive-thru hours for adults on October 21 are from 7 a.m.-2 p.m.  If you have not had any history of bad reactions to the vaccine, have no egg allergies, are not sick, an have no history of Guillian-Barre, you should have no problem getting vaccinated.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
