Savannah State on lockdown after campus shooting

Savannah State University was placed in lockdown around noon Friday after a shooting occurred at University Commons, an on-campus student residence.

As of 2 p.m., people were being allowed to leave campus, but no one was allowed to come onto the campus.

Loretta Heyward, SSU spokeswoman, confirmed there has been a shooting and that campus police are investigating.

She said one student has been transported to a local hospital.

Savannah-Chatham police have been called in to help with the investigation, Heyward said. Metro police say its S.W.A.T. team is on the scene.

Faculty and students were advised to stay where they were.

"We have locked our doors and are keeping our students inside," said Tara Cox, a marine biologist at the university.
