Mac Middle School students donate to Lawton Food Bank

Lawton_Students from Lawton's MacArthur Middle School are making Thanksgiving possible for those in need this year.  They have been holding a food drive for the past week, and on Monday, helped haul all the donations to the Lawton Food Bank where folks in line were anxious to get a helping hand.

Students not only collected the food and delivered it, they helped unload, stock, and organize it.  The drive was a competition between 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at the school, to see who could collect the most cans.  The 8th graders won by a landslide, bringing in more than 14,000 cans - 90% of what the entire school brought in.

The kids took a field trip to bring in the loot they collected over the past week.  Student Council President Taylor Kennedy says that healthy competition - and, a desire to help others - propelled the 8th graders to victory.  She says when they thought the 7th graders were catching up, they would work even harder.

Eighth-grader Jake Smith says he went house to house searching for people with big hearts who were willing to give.  "Christmas is coming around, and if it were me, I'd want to have a good Christmas," he said.  "I'd want to be with my family, and have a good dinner, and things to eat."

Once the donations were unloaded, the students helped organize it all, with the help of 8th- grade Counselor Katy Jackson-Seeley.  She says she hopes the competition taught the youngsters about why they should help others.  "I think it's important to teach our kids that everything doesn't come easy to everyone, and that it's important to give back to the community," she said.

Lawton Food Bank President Jeri Mosiman says that in the last 15 days, they have distributed 500 boxes of food - more than last November and December, combined.  The students also presented the food bank with a $400 check that came from donations from the students themselves, along with others who wanted to give.

If you would like to donate to the Lawton Food Bank, they're located at 1405 SW 20th Street or call 580-353-7994.
